Biography





Olinda Leca Mendes, 86, of Wallingford, died, Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford. She was the beloved wife of the late John Teixeira Mendes.

Olinda was born in Lowell, MA, March 8, 1923, a daughter of the late Joe Leca and Jesuina Ramos Leca, was raised in Madeira Island, Portugal and had been a Wallingford resident for many years. She had been employed at the Feldman Dress Company and was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church in Wallingford. She was a member of the Portuguese American Club and the Wallingford Senior Center, where she volunteered as a greeter and on the News Letter Committee. Olinda was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and UConn Women’s Basketball Team.


She is survived by her daughter Susan Mendes-Miller and her husband David P. Miller, of Meriden; her two grandsons Justin J. Morse and his fiancée Ada Vaill of Salem and Derek A. Morse and Rachel Rosen of New Jersey; her sister Mary Alves of Wallingford; and her sister-in-law Isabel Leca of San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by her sister Lee DiDonato and her husband Michael DiDonato; her brother Manuel Leca and his wife Sophie Leca; and her brother Jose Leca;

Her family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, Friday, (TODAY) January 29, 2010, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday from The Wallingford Funeral Home at 8:30 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to Most Holy Trinity Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery in Wallingford. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Wallingford Senior Center, 238 Washington St., Wallingford, CT. 06492.
